Arthritis - A Deadly Disease

Arthritis is the disease basically associated with the old people but the children may be affected by this disease. People of the age group 65 are mostly affected by arthritis in North America and they together constitute 70% of the total population. Women are at the major risk of getting affected by arthritis as compared to the men and this disease is more prevalent in the women of all ethnic races and cultures. According to an estimate about 46 million of people USA are suffering from this disease and the number increases every year. About one million people are admitted to the hospital just because of the problems they face because of arthritis.

Recital

All the persons suffering from arthritis complain the problem of extreme pain. The pain may be different according to the location and the individual. Rheumatoid arthritis is very worse in the morning and is characterized by stiffness. In the earlier stages the symptoms cannot be easily recognized. In the old individuals and the children pain may not be the major diagnostic feature as the old people move little and the children refuse to move the limb when it is paining. Important features of arthritis include speed and time of onset, pattern of joint movement, symmetry of symptoms, early morning stiffness, locking with inactivity, tenderness and other systemic factors. Physical examination and the radiography may be helpful in the diagnosis of the disease. Arthritis has been known from prehistoric times. Extra articular features of arthritis or joint disease include cutaneous nodules, oedema, ocular inflammation, diarrhea, bursitis, lymphadenopathy and urethritis. Blood tests indicate the presence of rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor (ANF) and extractable nuclear antigen.

Malady

In USA arthritis is the major cause of disability among the individuals and 20 million people are dependent upon the doctors and the physicians for their survival. It has been found that the 50% of an individual's salary who is suffering from arthritis is lost in the treatment of arthritis. The ability of a person to remain active is lost completely. Some also suffer from obesity, high cholesterol and risk of heart disease. Depression may also be found in such individuals.

Indications

Apart from the type of arthritis the common symptoms are pain, joint stiffness and swelling and a persisting pain around the joints. Other symptoms include inability to walk and move hands, malaise and feeling of tiredness, fever, weight loss, poor sleep, muscle ache, tenderness and difficulty in moving the joints.

Types

Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is a disorder where the body starts destroying its own tissues for some unknown reasons. The attack is not only restricted to the joints but also to other parts of the body. The major damage is caused to the lining of the joints and the cartilage resulting in the erosion of two opposing bones. The joints of the fingers, knee, wrists and elbows are affected in the rheumatoid arthritis. The disease is having symmetry and causes severe deformity in few years. It basically affects the people of age group 20 or more. This disorder in children causes pain, fever, skin rashes and limitations on the day to day activities. Actual cause rheumatoid arthritis is not known till present but the scientists are very actively engaged in finding out the treatments as possible for this disorder. The drugs that are administered against rheumatoid arthritis include intravenous injections of either corticosteroids or monoclonal antibodies. Remicade is a drug which is presently being used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and can be effective for short term only. Surgery can be done to replace the affected joint but there is no complete cure of the disorder. Other dangerous symptoms can also develop in later stages which include heart problems, gait abnormality and skin nodules.

Osteoarthritis

It affects the larger joints of the body like that of the back, hip or the knees. This is generally the result of the wear and tear of the joints. It begins in the cartilage and results in the erosion of two opposing bones. It starts with a minor pain which is experiences while walking and the pain becomes continuous during the night. The pain causes hindrance in the daily activity of the individual. It is basically a disorder very common among the old people especially the women of the age group 65. Osteoarthritis cannot be cured but can be prevented from becoming worse. Weight loss is the most common feature of this disease. Physical therapy of the joints may be helpful in getting some relief. Joint replacement may be of little help.

Severe Arthritis

Arthritis is a dangerous disease and in more intense cases it can result in severe deformities. The majority of the individuals suffering from the rheumatoid arthritis have deformed fingers. The deformity may also be seen in the wrist joint so it cannot be moved properly. Other problems include appearance of carpal tunnel syndrome due to nerve entrapment. In later cases the sensation of the fingers also gets lost. Infectious arthritis is another form of severe arthritis. It is characterized by appearance of sudden chills, fever and joint pain. This condition may be caused by bacteria. This disease can be easily diagnosed and prevented from becoming intense. Psoriasis is another form of arthritis. In this case first the patient develops skin problems followed by arthritis. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling. There is no cure for this disease and this occurs on a small scale. Lupus is a collagen vascular disorder that can be frequently found associated with arthritis. The symptoms of lupus include skin rash, extreme photosensitivity, hair loss, kidney problems, lung fibrosis and constant joint pain. Another problem that has been found associated with arthritis is gout which arises due to the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints leading to inflammation. The joints lose their activity and often swell.

Inhibition

Rheumatoid and the osteoarthritis are not curable but one can prevent himself from being affected by physical therapy, losing weight and eating healthy. The individuals who feel pain in the joints must immediately consult the physicians so that the treatment can be started as soon as possible in order to prevent the disorder from becoming intense.

Ministration

Once arthritis is diagnosed treatments are available for a number of symptoms that are frequently experienced. Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis are not curable. The treatments used against them can help in relieving pain for a short period but complete relief is not possible. Treatments include physical therapy, changing the lifestyle, orthopedic bracing, medications and dietary supplements. Arthroplasty also called joint replacement surgery can also be performed. Physical exercise has given better results in treatment of arthritis.

Medications

Physicians generally start the treatment with the use of drugs. The first choice of drugs is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ibuprofen and tramadol are the general pain killers which are basically used. The drugs although effective are also associated with a number of side-effects like the abdominal pain, bleeding, liver and kidney damage and ulcers. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs cannot be used for prolonged periods without the prescription of the physician. Corticosteroids are presently being used for the treatment of arthritis. They help in reducing the inflammation and also prevent the joint damage. Corticosteroids are associated with a number of side effects like ulcers, hypertension, cataracts, diabetes, skin bruising, and weight gain. Disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) is generally used for the treatment for the rheumatoid arthritis as they are helpful in preventing the joint damage. The commonly used DMARDs are methotrexate, hydrochloroquineand minocycline. They are also having many side effects in the form of liver and kidney damage, bone marrow suppression and possibility of other infections.

Immunosuppressants like cyclosporine and cyclophosphamide can be taken for getting relief from inflammation. These drugs make an individual more prone to other infections. Tumor necrosis factor inhibitors have been used for getting relief from inflammation and joint pain. They are also having some side effects as a person becomes susceptible to the risk of heart disease and other infections.
Occupational therapy and the physical therapy can help the people suffering from arthritis. Physical therapy can teach an affected individual how to relax the limb without damaging the joints. It can also provide splint and braces for the joints. Physical therapy also teaches how to drive the car, take bath and perform household work. Occupational therapy teaches how to reduce on the joints and perform the daily activities. Physical therapy also makes use of ice, heating pads and ultrasound guided massage therapy. Both these therapies help an individual to remain free from some of the difficulties of arthritis.

It can be concluded that arthritis is a very painful disease affecting the joints and there no complete cure for it only one can practice the use of physical and occupational therapy. Drugs can be helpful but are at risk and make an individual more prone to other infections.

Osteoarthritis Treatment

Most people presume osteoarthritis is a condition that only affects the elderly, and to an extent they would be correct. If you are over 40, you are more likely to develop it than a young person in their teens. However, it's not just the elderly who are at risk. Those who are overweight, those who play professional sport or have had a joint injury that is taking a long time to heal, are all at risk of developing the condition as well.

There is no single test that can check for osteoarthritis but fortunately, once detected, there are plenty of osteoarthritis treatments available, and they range widely from complementary therapies to surgery, medicines to non-surgical treatments. When your doctor diagnoses you, he'll talk you through the options in detail and help you find the best treatment to suit your needs.

Non-surgical treatments such as creams and gel can help relieve the pain. Made with an extract of chili peppers, they work to numb the area around the knee, reducing the pain. Non-surgical osteoarthritis treatments are normally prescribed as additional treatments rather than stand alone solutions, to help combat osteoarthritis in hands or knees.

There is little evidence that complimentary therapies help relieve the actual issues of osteoarthritis. More often than not, the therapies simply relax you, and put you in a more positive frame of mind, which gives you the will power and ability to better manage your pain. The exception to this is acupuncture, for which there is evidence to suggest it is an effective osteoarthritis treatment.

Surgery isn't for everyone, but if you suffer from severer osteoarthritis, treatment by knife is sometimes the only way to treat the condition. The type of surgery performed varies according to which part of your body is affected. Hip or knee replacements are more common in the elderly, whilst professional sportsmen may have to have foot or wrist surgery to re-position and stiffen the bones. Both these measure have high rates of success in reducing pain and increasing mobility; so even though it's the most invasive, surgery is sometimes the best option.

Medicine can't cure osteoarthritis - it can't replace your hips or realign your bones - but it can reduce the symptoms. Painkillers, which can be bought over the counter, are a common medical osteoarthritis treatment; if the pain is severe, the doctor may prescribe stronger painkillers. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are equally effective in relieving sufferers of symptoms, and are available through your doctor as cream, gels or pills.

Nobody Wants to Play With Ripped Baseball Pants

Nothing is more frustrating in baseball than having to play through a game with ripped baseball pants. You thought you were being smart and saving a few dollars by using some cheap knock off brand, but now you are paying the price every time that you have to slide into a base. Instead of dealing with both the embarrassment and pain, try buying some decent baseball pants.

There are plenty of companies out there that will allow you to get a quality pair of baseball pants at an affordable price. Wilson, Southland and Russell are but a few of the companies that are known for both quality products at a reasonable price. They each have their own features, but you can be certain that regardless of the label you choose, your pants will hold up.

Wilson baseball pants are one of the more well known brands. They offer you a popular label at a very cheap price. You will find a great selection and a wide variety of styles and colors. These pants are actually very popular with both little leagues and the higher levels of school ball as well.

If you are known to get into the dirt at every chance you can, Russell baseball pants may be a better choice. The reason for this is that they have extra padding stitched right into the knees of the pants and hold up much better than just about any other brand. The poly blend that they are made of is also more durable than pure cotton pants.

Both companies have their loyalists, but if you are buying pants for the first time, you may want to try them both on and compare them before buying them. It all really comes down to comfort and preference of style because you know you are going to be getting a great pair of pants regardless of your choice amongst these companies.

How To Do The German Suplex For MMA

The German Suplex is one of the most beautiful and most lethal slams in wrestling. If you manage to execute it during an MMA match, then you might be able to gain momentum or to get a huge score from the judges. Most of the times, a properly executed German Suplex could also knock your opponent right out.

To properly execute a German Suplex, please follow these steps:

1. Grab hold of your opponent from behind using a bear hug clutch. Pull your opponent's back as close as possible to your chest.

2. Duck a little to lower your center of gravity. Make sure that your hips are positioned below your opponent's hips. In order to do this, bend your knees but do not forget to straighten your back. This motion has to be done quickly because at the same time, your opponent will also try to lower his center of gravity as well to make it harder for you to lift him.

3. Snap your hip upward. To do this, straighten your legs quickly and pull your opponent up with the strength of your arms.

4. Keep your back in an arch form while you lean backwards. As you do this, your opponent will struggle in mid-air to cushion the slam.

5. This is the most vital part of the slam because if you fail to do this, you will also slam yourself and feel the impact of the German Suplex. Remember to twist your body sideways as both you and your opponent are driving to the ground with your backs.

6. Slam your opponent to the ground once you have reached the mid-way point of your slam. Gravity will pull your opponent hard. Your opponent could land on his back or on his head. Either way, the German Suplex will seriously hurt him and you are halfway to victory.

Remember, do not attempt to do this move unless you are training with professionals under the guidance of credible mentors. The German Suplex is one of the most dangerous wrestling moves.

If you do not have a good wrestling background and are thinking about incorporating the German Suplex into your MMA arsenal, then you need to learn the basics of wrestling by joining in a wrestling class and at the same time.

The German Suplex requires wrestling strength, speed and agility. So, you must be able to train those three aspects before attempting to execute this move. Otherwise, you will put yourself at risk of being injured.

Need a Financial Breakthrough? Access the Power of Prayer!

When they need a financial breakthrough, most people have no trouble asking God for help. As Christians, we are taught to "make our requests known" through prayer. We understand that there is power in prayer. We understand that there is power in prayer. And when you have an urgent financial need, you don't have time to wait. You need all the power you can get and you need it fast! Right?

Unfortunately, too often, we fail to see that power work in a timely manner-if at all. But how can that be? Scripture assures us that God hears our prayers and is faithful to answer, right? So what's the problem? Why don't we get what we're asking God for-when we need it?

To achieve your financial breakthrough you must effectively using the power of prayer!! That's why! You see, the power of prayer is not found solely during time on your knees. This is just the beginning-it's like flipping the switch that sets a series of events in motion. It's the completion of those events that produces the results you desire. So here are four series of events that ignite the power of prayer and expedite your financial breakthrough.

#1: The Word As The Foundation For Your Financial Breakthrough.

For your prayers to lead to quick results you have to know what to pray. God doesn't honor just any old request. This means you have to find the word on your particular situation. So, the first thing to do is answer the question, "God, what does your word say about how my situation is supposed to be? To help you out, here are a few examples.

If you need money for a basic need like buying food and paying the rent or mortgage, utilities, or for an urgent medical procedure:

Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. (Matthew 6:32-33 NLT)

For money to pay creditors to avoid losing your car, house, or business:

The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. (Psalm 91:14 NLT)

Or to overcome poverty or lack and get on the road to prosperity:

Study this Book of the Law continually. Meditate on it day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it. Only then will you succeed. I command you-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:8-9 NLT)

Okay, so now you're armed with a few scriptures, now what? How do I use this to help me get what I need?

#2: A Strong Belief That God Will Provide Your Financial Breakthrough.

Most of the time we believe the word is true for someone else but not for ourselves. You must convince yourself that His word is true not just for your family member, friend or neighbor but that it's true for you! There are two things to do to convince your brain that the word works!

Number one, you must constantly confess the word. Speak these scriptures over and over and over and over. Every time you have a thought contrary to His word, counter that thought by speaking the word out loud. Don't be afraid if others hear you.

Number two, visualize that word being true. You have to see that financial breakthrough happening in your life. As you confess the word, picture it coming true. Engross yourself in that image as if you're already there. Feel every emotion that you'll experience when your breakthrough arrives. Heck! In your mind, go ahead and start planning the party!!!

Okay, got the word, and I'm convinced that it's going to happen for me-not just someone else but me! Now what?

#3: Actions That Back Up The Belief For Your Financial Breakthrough!

Notice in the scriptures above God says, I will do this if you do that. The biggest mistake that limits the power of prayer and delays your financial breakthrough is lack of proper action after the prayer. We know that without faith it is impossible to please God. And, we know that faith is believing His word. What we forget or tend to discount is that there is work involved in having faith-without works faith is dead. So now it's time to act like the word is true. How do you do that? If God say's that he has provided for your needs then get busy finding out where he's keeping that provision.

But, Arica, you say, what about waiting on the Lord? What about it? When your house is on fire do you sit in the living room waiting for God to put the fire out? Of course not! Then why sit around waiting on a miracle when your lights are about to get cut off or you're about to lose your home? Just because I'm busy doing what I can doesn't mean that I'm not waiting on God. I'll be right where I'm supposed to be when he needs to get my miracle to me. In the meantime, I'm going to do what he says in Matthew 7:7.

Ask

If you need money for basic needs or to keep from losing your car or house ask yourself, "What programs, services, etc. are available to people in this situation?" If you need a job ask, "What must I do get a job?"

Seek

Seek out those who can lead you to or provide your financial breakthrough by asking, "What individuals, companies, or government agencies can provide me with all or part of what I need?" "Where are they located?" "How do I get in touch with them?"

Knock

Knock on the doors of those that can possibly help you and ask for your financial breakthrough. Find out, "Can you help me?" "Do I qualify?" If not, "Do you know someone who can?" Don't wait for God to magically drop the answer to your prayer in your lap. Get out of the house and find out where he's keeping your financial breakthrough!

And lastly,

#4: Persistence In Faith For Your Financial Breakthrough.

Now of course there are times when you've done everything you know to do and still don't see your financial breakthrough. What do you do?

Persist in faith-that is, in believing and doing. No matter what it looks like keep using the word of God to combat every thought, emotion or feeling that tries to convince you that your financial breakthrough isn't coming. Keep asking, "What else can be done? Keep seeking, "Who else can help?" And keep knocking, "Where else can I go?" Before you know it, you'll have your breakthrough and a whole lot more!

Repair of Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture Via Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA)

When a dog tears the CCL in their knee (stifle), there are various procedures and implants to be used in the repair. In a prior article CCL Knee Surgery and Rehabilitation, we discussed the Tightrope implant option. Having personal experience with both the Tightrope and now the TTA procedure, following are details on Tibial Tuberosity Advancement.

The knee structure in a dog versus a human is similar in the fact that the critical stabilizing component is the cruciate ligament (known as the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL in the knee in humans and cranial cruciate ligament or CCL in the stifle in dogs). The main functions of the CCL is to prevent cranial displacement of the tibia, prevent hyperextension of the knee, and prevent internal rotation of the tibia and forward thrusting motion during weight bearing to avert hyperextension of the knee. A CCL injury occurs when the joint is rotated unexpectedly or overextended. Other issues such as obesity or repeated stresses can also damage this joint causing changes over time and bring about arthritis.

When the CCL is damaged, either an acute rupture, chronic rupture, or partial tear, often the meniscus which is a cushion inside the joint is often damaged and torn. A tear in the meniscus can cause even more pain to the dog. With a meniscus tear a clicking or popping sound can be heard when walking. For CCL damage, the dog will experience pain and will either favor the leg or not put any weight bearing on it. The knee will also likely swell and range of motion may be compromised. If the dog only has a partial tear, the signs are more difficult to see. The dog may appear to move slower, limp, appear stiff, when sitting holds leg out to the side, has difficulty rising, but shows improvement after rest. Over time, the CCL will get worse resulting in an unstable, painful knee with added arthritic conditions in the joint.

What is TTA? It is one of the techniques used to stabilize the knee in a dog. This surgical technique was developed in Switzerland and available since 2004. The surgeon will fracture the bone by making a cut in the tibia along the front, moving the bone out and stabilizing with a titanium plate and screws. This will make the dog's leg slightly wider than their other one. Titanium is being used in an effort to help in cold weather areas. When stainless steel was used, there were issues found when the weather became cold, dogs would experience discomfort from the steel. Using titanium appears to eliminate that issue. By moving the tibia forward, the force of weight bearing has changed by changing the angle of the ligament. This implant is held in place by screws and is permanent.

CCL rupture is one of the most common orthopedic issues seen in dogs and CCL repair is the most common orthopedic surgery performed by veterinary surgeons. By researching options, you and your vet will make the best decision for your dog that may be experiencing this problem. There will be a long road to recovery but following the strict advice of the surgeon, keeping the dog on lead for the eight week recovery period, and limited exercise, proper healing should occur with your dog being allowed to resume normal activity.

Common Causes of Knee Pain - Knee Sprains

When someone sprains their knee, many people will say that it's a good thing it wasn't a break, because that would hurt a lot more. Did you know that sometimes a sprain can hurt just as much, even more, than a broken bone? Just because it's only a sprain doesn't mean that it isn't painful and swollen, and although it may not be broken, but it's still pretty difficult to walk on it, at least for the first few days.

What is a Knee Sprain?

Basically, a knee sprain is an injury of one of the ligaments in the knee. Most of the time, knee sprains are caused by a fall or by hitting the knee against something, and many knee sprains are caused by twisting the knee in the wrong way, which is pretty easy to do. Knee sprains need to be properly treated so they do not to cause problems in the future.

Treatment for Knee Sprains

There are many cases where a sprained knee can be as swollen and painful as a break, so one of the first things to do is to immediately ice the swollen area. Next, the injured person should visit the nearest emergency room for x-rays to make sure that there are no fractures in the joint or kneecap. Once a sprain has been diagnosed, the physician will recommend the RICE treatment (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate).

Rest: Of course, most movements, especially walking, are going to cause pain and irritate a sprained knee, so it is important that the injured person rest the leg as much as possible. Walking should be kept to a minimum, at least for a few days, until there is little to no pain during walking.

Ice: For the first two or three days following a knee sprain, it is important to keep the injured area iced in order to reduce swelling. Ice packs should be used four or five times each day, for about 20 minutes to a time. For an ice pack that doesn't leak, try soaking a sponge, then placing it in a zip lock bag. When it thaws, the water will be absorbed by the sponge, and won't leak all over the place.

Compress: In order to help reduce swelling and immobilize the leg somewhat, the sprained knee should be wrapped with an elastic bandage. The best way to put one on is to start below the knee, and wrap up, in a criss-cross motion. Remember not to wrap it too tightly; you don't want to cut off circulation.

Elevate: It is important to keep the injured knee elevated as much as possible to relieve pain. When the leg is higher than the heart, which can be done just by propping it up with a few pillows, it helps to decrease blood flow, which will help to keep the swelling down.

Many physicians will also recommend that those with knee sprains take an anti-inflammatory medication, such as Ibuprofen. After a few days, the ice treatment should stop and heat should be used to ease stiffness and bring back the flexibility. After a week or so, the injured person should be up and about, going about his or her normal routines.
