How Should the VA Rate a Veteran's Service-Connected Arthritis?


One of the more common medical conditions that military veterans seek to have service-connected is arthritis of the knees.

It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the most common errors that the VA makes is failing to properly rate arthritis of the knees.

Here is a general summary of how you can double-check the VA's rating to make sure that they properly evaluated and rated your service-connected arthritis of the knee.

Before getting started, it is important to understand that, generally, the VA is not permitted to "pyramid" ratings. A "pyramid rating" happens when the VA rates the same disability under multiple - and sometimes different - diagnoses. Read the regulation at 38 C.F.R. 禮 4.14 to learn more about pyramid ratings.

Arthritis is different. If a military veteran is service-connected with arthritis of the knees, that Veteran might be entitled to up to 3 ratings for the same condition. They key word is "might" - what is important is that the VA evaluate and rate the unique way that arthritis manifests in your knees.

Here are three (3) factors that the VA should look at to see how to rate arthritis of the knees for any military veterans.

1) Functional Loss. Functional Loss is a limitation to the range of motion of the knee. The VA Rater should focus on what the military veteran's medical records say about his/her ability to perform the normal working movements of the knee with "excursion, speed, strength, coordination and endurance". This aspect of arthritis of the knee is typically rated under the Diagnostic Codes 5000-5010 - (Diagnostic Codes and their criteria are found at 38 C.F.R. Part 4.)

2) Instability. Instability is the inability of the knee to play the "support" role it plays - an inability to keep you standing and balanced. If this limitation is present in your knee arthritis, the VA examiner should rate it using three (3) criteria under Diagnostic Code 5257:

a) slight (which equates to an additional 10% rating)

b) moderate (which equates to an additional 20% rating)

c) severe (which equates to an additional 30% rating)

3. Pain. The most common and recognizable manifestation of arthritis is pain. The VA typically does not consider pain in determining the proper rating for a disease or condition. Arthritis is a little different; even if there is no Functional Loss, the VA Examiner can grant a rating for pain if there is evidence that the military veteran is impacted by pain when he or she uses the knee in normal, daily, repetitive use and/or when pain limits the Range of Motion.

Confused? Don't worry. The VA Examiner probably is, too.

I have seen a lot of improper and bizarre ratings and evaluations of pain for service-connected arthritis of the knee.

In fact, I recently looked at a claim where the VA examiner rated arthritis as sciatica. Sciatica is a condition that relates to the nerves of the spinal cord; while pain may refer down the legs to the knees in sciatica, there was no diagnosis for the condition in the C-File - the examiner simply never figured out that arthritis and sciatica are two totally different conditions.

One caveat - the explanation above is simplified, and under the facts of your case, it may not be the right analysis. Ever case is different, every military veteran's medical situation is unique.

If you are a military veteran with service-connected arthritis of the knee, it is highly recommended that you bring your arthritis rating decision - and the code sheet - to an attorney or VSO representative that is familiar with the proper way to rate arthritis.

If you don't know what the VA Code Sheet is, it is even more important that you get it in to have someone review your rating to make sure you are getting all the compensation you are entitled to.

Osteoarthritis does not have a cure but there are a number of different ways to keep the pain to a minimum and enable joint movement. A treatment for osteoarthritis can be divided into four different categories. These categories are medication, therapy, surgery and lifestyle changes.

Physical therapy is something that is conducted on a person to person basis and will help the movement of your joints. Occupational therapy will help you to find different way to stop putting stress on your joint during the day. There are centers that will have classes for people who suffer from chronic pain. Going to these classes will help you to find ways to deal with the pain of osteoarthritis.

There are a number of procedures and surgeries that can be done to help people with this condition. A procedure called Viscosupplementation is when hyaluronic acid derivatives are injected into the knee to create a cushion. Joint replacement is also something that can be looked at. 繚 Codeine Phosphate. Codeine phosphate is a less popular painkiller, which has three sizes- 15mg, 30mg and 60mg. The usual side effects from taking it are rash's and itchy skin, difficulty with breathing, redness, sweating more often the normal, feeling sick and many others. 繚 Naproxen. Naproxen is usually used for reducing inflammation, in many conditions, not only knee pain. There are some side-effects, which include headaches, feeling drowsy, and heartburn, amongst others.

If I Need a Total Knee Replacement, What Are My Options?


The information provided below is meant to educate the patient about the options available to knee replacement candidates.  Ultimately your surgeon will make these decisions.  Your doctor should explain to you which knee replacement is best for you and why.

When a surgeon considers a patient for a total knee replacement, she takes into account the patient's age, lifestyle, and damage to the joint.  In addition, a surgeon's decision to use one procedure over another, or one type of implant over another, often depends on that surgeon's training and clinical situation.  Each implant design has advantages and disadvantages, but whichever implant your surgeon decides to go with, it's good to know that total knee replacement surgeries offer among the greatest success rates of all orthopedic operations. Nevertheless, we advise you to research your options so that you can intelligently discuss with your surgeon what approach will be best for you.

What happens in knee replacement surgery?

A total knee replacement replaces the damaged bearing surfaces in your knee that are causing pain.  At the lower end of the femur (thigh bone), the bone is trimmed to accept a specially shaped metal component and the upper end of the tibia (shin bone) likewise is trimmed to accept a metal tray.  Into this tray will be fitted a plastic bearing.

The  metal components can be secured to the cut bone surfaces by the surgeon's choice of bone cement or a non-cement method called "bone ingrowth".  The majority of knee replacements are generally cemented into place.  This is one option you can ask your surgeon about.  "What type of fixation will you use to hold my knee in place?"

The outer surface of the femoral component is shaped to allow the kneecap (patella) to slide up and down in its groove. The surgeon may choose to retain the natural kneecap or re-surface it. You can ask your surgeon about this.  "Will you be replacing my kneecap or retaining it?

The Cruciate Ligaments are major ligaments inside the knee. They provide support to and stablize the movement of the knee. In total knee replacement surgery, the CL can be kept or removed and this choice depends on their condition, the type of knee implant or the type of surgery the surgeon likes to do.  This is another option you can ask your surgeon about.  "Will you be removing or retaining my cruciates?"

Sometimes the deterioration of the knee joint is such that total knee replacement can be avoided and your surgeon may suggest resurfacing or partially replacing components of your arthritic knee. Preserving healthy bone stock is especially important to younger and more active individuals.  In the last section of this article, we will talk about when a total knee replacement may not be necessary.

What are the different types of implants?

The plastic bearing in your new knee joint will either be fixed or mobile-bearing.  This means that the polyethylene insert is either clicked onto a stationary platform (fixed) or able to move on a rotating metal base (mobile).  Most people get a fixed-bearing prosthesis that reduces knee pain dramatically and may last for many years.  If you are younger, more active and/or overweight, sometimes a doctor may recommend a mobile-bearing or a rotating platform knee replacement designed for potentially longer performance with less wear.

In addition, there is the medial pivot implant which replicates the rotating, twisting, bending, flexion, and stability of your natural knee, so it feels more like your natural knee. This design "stays put" or is more stabile during normal knee motion as opposed to sliding forward slightly in flexion.

Custom or special needs implants are another option when choosing an implant.  This will depend on whether your skeleton is smaller or bigger than average.  Research shows that regular-sized implants may overhang on the bone and lead to soft tissue interference or mid-flexion instability in those people with narrow femurs.

Maybe a total knee replacement isn't necessary . . .

In some cases, a surgeon will be able to preserve part of the knee through resurfacing or partially replacing components of your arthritic knee.

Partial Knee Resurfacing is an innovative procedure designed to provide quicker recovery and improved surgical outcome.  This is for patients with damage confined to only one part of the knee which can be resurfaced without compromising the healthy bone and tissue surrounding it. The implants are usually custom-made implants using CAD (computer aided design) from a special digital imaging of the knee.

Another option is a partial knee replacement (also called a unicompartmental arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty).  This involves putting a smaller implant on just one side (or compartment) of the knee where the damage is limited to that part rather than replacing the entire surface.  A partial knee replacement is done if part of the knee joint is damaged by arthritis and the other compartments have healthy, normal cartilage.

Arthritis Prevention And Relief


About 50 million people in the U.S. have some form of arthritis. Arthritis is a general term that means inflammation of the joints and is often accompanied by symptoms such as redness, swelling, stiffness, and pain.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most common. Causes vary depending on the type of arthritis. However, in all arthritic conditions, the degeneration of joints involves some ongoing biochemical processes which negatively alter the metabolism that is essential for maintaining healthy joints.

Common Forms Of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative arthritis or wear-and-tear arthritis, is the most prevalent type of arthritis affecting over 20 million Americans. OA is the degeneration of the cartilage within a joint. The synovial fluid that keeps the joint lubricated and cushioned is typically reduced as well, eventually leading to abnormal bone changes. OA is the most common form of arthritis. It is not a systemic condition and does not spread throughout the body. It affects only the joint(s) where the deterioration has occurred, of which most common are the knees, hips, spine, hands, and toes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease which manifests itself in multiple joints of the body, especially the fingers, wrists, feet, and ankles. It primarily affects the lining of the joints (synovial membrane), leading to erosions of the cartilage and bone and sometimes, joint deformity. RA may also affect nearly every other part of the body. It is an autoimmune disease, which means the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy tissues. RA usually affects joints on both sides of the body equally and is often associated with fatigue and prolonged stiffness after rest.

Gouty arthritis is a defective metabolic disease of uric acid crystals depositing in the smaller bones of the feet and is usually accompanied with acute pain. Uric acid is a metabolic product of fructose and purines (nitrogen compounds) found in meats and organ meats.

Juvenile arthritis refers to all types of arthritis that occur in children.

Adkylosing spondylitis affects the spine. Due to inflammation, the bones of the spine grow together.

Fibromyalgia affects the muscles and attachments to the bone. It is most commonly found in women.

Infectious or septic arthritis is infection of one or more joints caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In some cases, infectious arthritis can occur as a manifestation of Lyme disease, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick.
Psoriatic arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is associated with the autoimmune skin disease called psoriasis.

Systemic lupus erthematosus (lupus) is an autoimmune disorder that can inflame the skin, joints and connective tissues, kidneys, brain and other organs throughout the body.

Causes Of Arthritis

The causes associated with inflammation of the joints depend on the form of arthritis. They may include:

Age: The older you are, the more likely you are to develop arthritis, especially osteoarthritis.

Autoimmunity: Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and lupus arthritis are examples of autoimmune disorders in which the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system.

Heredity: Scientists have discovered that the genetic marker HLA-DR4 is linked to rheumatoid arthritis, and HLA-B27 to ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. Although having the gene doesn't mean that you will absolutely get this form of arthritis, you can if the conditions are right.

Infections: Some forms of arthritis are the result of bacteria, viruses, or fungi that can either cause the disease or trigger it in susceptible people. Lyme arthritis comes from bacteria transmitted by the bite of a deer tick. Rheumatoid arthritis may be triggered by a virus in people with a certain genetic marker.

Metabolic abnormalities: Gout, which affects mostly men, is the result of a defect in body chemistry, and in this case, the metabolism of uric acid.

Overuse: Repetitive motions can put tremendous strain on joints. Sustaining an injury to a joint further increases the odds of developing osteoarthritis in that joint.

Eat Right To Beat Joint Inflammation

Check for food sensitivities

Researchers found that rheumatoid arthritis and many other autoimmune disorders are highly related to food sensitivities, one of which is gluten. Gluten is a protein composite found in grass-related grains such as wheat, rye, barley, spelt, and kamut.

When the immune system misidentifies certain foods as "foreign", chemicals are released from immune cells to destroy these "invaders". As a result, tissue inflammation and damage occurs.

Overtime, food sensitivities compromise the integrity of the gastrointestinal lining and lead to a condition called "leaky gut syndrome", whereby molecules that are usually too large to exit through the gastrointestinal lining escape to the bloodstream, causing systemic inflammation and in some cases, joint destruction.

If you have autoimmune-related arthritis, you should get a blood test, such as the Mediator Release Test (test for IgG, IgM, C3, C4), for food sensitivities. You can contact me if you need to do this test. Once you have determined your reactive foods, abstain from eating them for 3-6 months. The best way to be sure that a reactive food is safe again to eat is to challenge it by having it three times a day for three consecutive days. If no adverse symptoms appear, you are no longer sensitive to it.

More Omega-3, Less Omega-6

Cyclooxygenase or COX is an enzyme your body produces that regulates prostaglandins, which are mediators and messengers. There are two different COX enzymes - COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is an enzyme that regulates prostaglandins that maintain the health of your stomach and kidneys. COX-2 is an enzyme created when there is inflammation.

When you take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to treat pain and inflammation, it inhibits the production of COX-2, hence, reducing pain and speeding up the recovery. However, one of the side effects of NSAID is that it also inhibits COX-1. Since COX-1 keeps your stomach lining healthy and affects blood clotting, NSAID has the tendency to cause stomach irritation and ulcers.

Fortunately, there is a non-drug way to cut down your inflammation. Researchers learned that COX-2 enzymes become more active and cause more inflammation when you take in too much omega-6 fatty acids relative to omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.

Omega-6 fatty acids are abundantly found in corn, cottonseed, safflower, soybean, sunflower, and vegetable oils. Beware that many processed foods, snack foods, deep fried foods, and restaurant foods are prepared with such oils, so you want to keep consumption of these products to a minimum.

Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids are fatty, cold-water fish such as Alaskan salmon, anchovies, sardines, and herrings and meats from grass-fed animals. Numerous studies have shown that omega-3 fats are remarkably effective in combating inflammation-related disorders, including arthritis.

Lastly, you should never use canola oil although it has been marketed as "heart-healthy" and is higher in omega-3 and lower in omega-6. The reason is that canola does not come from a natural plant but instead, the genetically engineered rapeseed plant. What's more, a recent study indicates that canola contributes to vitamin E deficiency, a vitamin that's essential for a healthy heart.

Eat Your Vegetables

Have generous servings of organically grown vegetables every day. They are low in sugar and full of antioxidants which help reduce tissue damage from inflammation.

However, when you have arthritis, you should avoid the nightshade vegetables (eggplant, all kinds of peppers, white potatoes, and tomatoes). They contain a substance called solanine, to which some people are highly sensitive. Solanine interferes with enzymes in the muscles and may cause pain and discomfort.

  • Belongs to a group of natural pigments in the carotenoid family. Sea creatures with a red or pinkish color such as salmon, lobster, shrimp, and crab get this color from a diet of krill and other small organisms that eat astaxanthin-rich algae and plankton.

Gout is a common cause of arthritis affecting more than 8 million Americans. Although it affects men more than women, there appears to be an increasing incidence of the disease in post-menopausal women. The incidence overall appears to be increasing as a result of the epidemic of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and elevated lipids, all of which are associated with gout.

Gout, in 90 per cent of cases, is caused by the inability of the kidneys to get rid of urate. In the other 10 per cent, there is an overproduction of urate.

Animals other than humans don't get gout because they have an enzyme called uricase which breaks urate down and allows the animal to excrete it. Human beings, on the other hand, lack this enzyme and therefore are unable to excrete urate (uric acid) appropriately. This leads to accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints and other organ systems.

Gout typically occurs in three stages. The first stage is what is called "asymptomatic hyperuricemia." Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is characterized by elevate blood uric acid levels without attacks of gout. The higher the blood uric acid level is, though, the greater likelihood of an eventual attack.

The second phase or stage is termed "acute intermittent gout". During this stage, patients have attacks of gout but after the attack is over, they are relatively symptom free. The danger here is that chronic inflammation persists despite the absence of symptoms.

The third stage is called "chronic tophaceous gout." In this phase, patients have chronic pain due to repeated attacks of gout with an increasing burden of urate accumulation in the joints, kidneys, and other organs systems. Patients develop " tophi" which are deposits of inflammatory cells, urate crystals and fibrin. Gradual destruction of the joints occurs with the development of crippling deformity.

The treatment of gouty arthritis consists of a two-fold approach with relief of the acute attack accompanied by attempts to lower the urate burden.

Acute attacks can be treated with colchicine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and steroids. The latter can be given either orally or directly into the affected joint.

Drugs that lower urate need to be used for the chronic treatment of gout. These drugs, when initiated, need to be accompanied by gout prophylaxis in the form of daily doses of either colchicine or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, for at least six months. The reason is this: as urate shifts as a result of the effect of uric acid lowering drugs, there is a predisposition to acute attacks.

Drugs used to lower urate consist of medicines that make patients urinate out their uric acid (probenecid), medicines that suppress uric acid production ( allopurinol, febuxostat [Uloric]), and uricolytic drugs. An example of the latter is pegloticase (Krystexxa), which converts uric acid to allantoin, an inert ingredient that is then excreted.

Most rapists or sexual predators are opportunistic in nature. They see an opportunity and they jump on it, knowing that they won't be caught. A sexual attacker or predator is banking on your embarrassment, and being too embarrassed you won't speak up. NEWS FLASH! When you do have the courage to speak up, probably you are NOT going to be believed anyway! It will be your word against his. Let's suppose that he is an older more distinguished appearing gentleman, if anyone holds it to be true, they will assume that you wanted it, and you instigated the sexual seduction.

Since this previously happened to me by a male relative, I will tell you straight up that nobody believed me either. Even not knowing your name, I believe that it happened to you, and it might happen to your friend too. Right now, I'm going to give you some self-defense tips that will knock your attacker on his _ _ _!

Every moment from now on, I want you to become more aware of where you are, with whom you are with, and what if any are some of the tools that you can use for your own self-defense. First off, do not present opportunities for these perverts! Cover up, and do not flaunt everything you got, when in male company even gay males. Wherever you find yourself, look around, and discover where any exits are and notice if they really work? Windows, doors, fire escapes etc.

Awareness. Let's talk about your neighborhood for a moment. Be aware of where you're walking ladies. Stop texting or get off the cell phone if you are walking in an isolated or wooded area. Look at the area, and note where someone might hide. Look out for hidden doorways, a patch of woods, or trees, under a bridge, beside an isolated staircase through the woods, behind some hedges or bushes. Be extra cautious if you HAVE to walk through deserted areas. Try to walk in pairs. Be aware of high car traffic areas, and sections of town that are very convenient to cars stopping or direct access to freeways, or turnpikes. Watch out for short cuts across isolated areas, fields, old factories. Those areas present OPPORTUNITY if a sexual predator wants to throw you in his truck or car. Don't go alone if you can avoid it, and don't walk there at night.

What do you have in your purse or on your person that could be a great weapon? Here's a few examples:

Your Keys. Hold the key between your two fingers with the sharp end pointing out. Use it to jab or stab into the groin area, or eye area. Hold on tightly so that you don't drop it.

Hair Spray. Spray in the eyes, and when he is momentarily blinded kick him or knee him as hard as you can in the groin, and follow up with a fist directly into his nose. Don't throw a punch from the side or with a swing.

Punch straight from your chest, or body, because he may see the punch coming if you try a swinging punch, and block it. If he goes down, don't run blindly, you should know to where you are running. Don't run into a dead end, or a trap.

Don't get cornered in an alley. He may not be alone, so be aware of a tag team play with a second or third attacker.

Pepper Spray. If you have pepper spray, spray it in his eyes, and do the same thing, punch or kick him in the groin, or stomp on the instep (highest point on top of foot) with your heel.

Sharp Metal Nail File.  Jam it into his groin or try to stab him in one eye. Use your other hand to either punch him in the groin or grab his balls. If he grabs both your hands, use your knee into his groin and then follow with a foot stomp. If that doesn't work, you jam your heel into his knee cap. Keep focusing on one, since you may have already caused damage and pain there. But hit any one that you can reach.

Head Butt. I don't recommend this unless in a desperate situation. If he has both your hands, and you can't reach him with your feet, use the part of your forehead that starts your hairline. Pull backwards a little and then slam that part of your head, directly into his nose, or chin. Twist your arms and hands in towards your body and then throw closed fists (like hammers) into his nose, followed by: quickly swing your arms and fists out and down to the sides of your chest or hips, and slam both fists into his groin.

The mall poses lots of hazards and opportunities for attacks. Where? Back exit doors that are in a more isolated part of the mall can be a good escape route for abductions. Doors that lead into storage areas of stores, can be a potential target spot. Parking garages. My advice, don't walk alone or end up there by yourself. Tell someone you trust well, exactly where you are going to be even if you are going to the ladies-room by yourself. Make sure that someone comes looking for you after a certain pre-established time. If you go in alone, check the stalls. Check to see if you see legs, and shoes look masculine or out of place. Check to see if the door opens or it seems to lock, or is blocked in some manner. It could be a set up. Don't get into texting while you're alone there, a distracted woman is easy target. In the mall hallways, the bottom of a fire extinguisher, if one is available, and you can loosen it, from the wall, is a nice hard object to slam into his face, or swing up into his groin. Your heavy purse swung hard into his groin can be a temporary determent to your attacker. A closed, flat hard cell phone, slammed into his groin can be very effective, to break away and run.

Other things that you might have on you or in your purse:

Ornamental Hair Pins, with sharp combs or hair-pins. Remember: Eyes, groin, knees, and feet.

Heavy Hair Brush Smash into his nose, and or bring it up into his groin. It may sound strange but some of us girls have silverware in bigger bags to eat our lunch on the go. If that is you, jam the fork into his eye, or into the back of his hand, stick him in the groin, stomach or top of his leg, on the upper thigh close to the groin area. That hurts! Follow with a second blow, or hit. Remember he is attacking you, and he only has a small window of opportunity before you are able to escape or get someone's attention to help you. Listen closely! Once you start fighting him! It's for your life! Don't give up until you are free and safe!

Cars. If you are being stalked or someone is pulling you into a car, fight like mad with all the above techniques. If you are in the car, of an acquaintance or date, who starts something, you still have some tools around.

The cigarette lighter. Push the hot end into his eye or back of hand, or side of neck. If your other hand is free, punch him in the nose. Punch from the chest. Knee him in the groin. Spit in his face, and punch him. Scratch or claw his eyes and face. Use your elbow, and drive it back into his ribs, or groin if you can reach. Swing your elbow up into his chin or nose.

The sharp end of an ice scraper slammed into face, or groin, ear. Whatever you can reach can be a potential tool. If there is a lock-stick for the steering wheel see if you can smash him in the face or over the head. But be careful with this one, because he could use it against you. Tools in the car's glove box like an emergency glass breaking and seatbelt tool. Jam it in his face, or groin, slam it against the side of his head. The point is he is expecting to have the upper hand and the element of surprise on his side. He is probably not expecting you to reach in the glove box or under the seat for a hard or sharp object with which to fight him off. But, that is exactly how you have to think and you have to take action! You have to fight if it comes down to it! Be aware!

React very quickly! Be ready if you are attacked! If you strike, do it hard and fierce! Don't hesitate! If the first blow doesn't take him down or stop him, hit him again! If he falls back use your feet and legs, and drive a well-placed foot or both feet into his groin or body. Keep kicking out. Try to smash the glass with your shoes or feet. If you have something hard in your hands try to break the window. You may break the window and or get someone's attention. I sincerely hope that you never have to use any of these tips, but upon reading this article, memorize every tip that you find here. They may well save your life or your friend's life.

  • Next consider why people choose to work with you. What do you have that your competitors don't? How are you different? (Unlike other Virtual Assistants, we specialise in...) Stay away from platitudes. Be unique. Be real. Establish your best selling points.

  • End with a call to action to develop the conversation and consolidate the relationship. What is Gouty Arthritis?


Gouty arthritis is a problem of joint and bones that usually a severe painful attack when moving. The Health Benefits of Rowing


Slide seat rowing is the most magnificent sport there is, according to Fritz Hagerman, Ph.D., a professor in the Biological Science Department at Ohio University. Hagerman, who studies exercise physiology such as aerobic and anaerobic capacities, metabolic response, and the effects of blood lactate levels on athletes, found that competitive rowers expended almost twice the number of calories on a 2,000-meter course as a runner in a 3,000-meter steeplechase. He says the latter is considered one of the toughest events.

Doctors say there are now 1,000,000 joint replacement surgeries performed each year due to high impact sporting related activities. In 1999, 440,000 people had joint replacement surgery in the United States, with the hip and knee making up 98 percent of those procedures. For hip surgeries, the average age was 66 and for knees, the average age was 68.

Both competitive and recreational rowing are unique in comparison to most sports in that they exercise all of your major muscle groups. Everything from your legs, back, and arms are engaged while rowing. In addition, rowing is a low-impact sport. When executed properly, the rowing stroke is a fairly safe motion, providing little room for the serious injury often found in contact and high-impact sports.

The motion of each stroke is made up of four parts that flow into one another. These are the catch, the drive, the finish, and the recovery. The following is a description of the bio-mechanics of rowing.

The catch is the start of each stroke and it is the moment when you place your oar into water. The legs, hips and shoulders in use during the catch involve the following muscle groups: quadriceps, gastrocenius, soleus, gluteus maximus, and biceps brachii.

The drive
As you begin to push with your legs, you are entering the drive of the stroke. During the drive your l egs, back and arms are working with the trapezlus, posterio deltoid, quadriceps, pectorals major and biceps brachii muscle groups.

The pull
Once the legs are fully extended, you begin to pull the oar in with your arms and swing your shoulders backward, bringing yourself to the finish position. You have just utilized the rest of the entire body's muscle groups as follows: g luteus maximus, quadriceps, brachioradialis, and abdominal.

The recovery
The entire process is repeated, each movement flowing into the next, forming another stroke.

How To Do Alpaca Shearing On Your Own


Alpaca Shearing is only needed once a year, yet good cutting is essential for being able to market your fiber as the highest quality. If you are a new alpaca owner, you will need to balance the need to be frugal with the need to offer a quality fleece cut in the way that mills or artisans need in order to spin strong yarn.

First off, shearing is done in late spring, this allows the alpaca to stay cooler as summer comes along and to have the fleece growing in by the time colder weather comes. If timing allows, one of the best investments of your time and money would be to attend a shearing workshop. Nothing beats seeing and hearing actual shearing going on. Many farms offer workshops as a way to supplement their farm income. Once you become an expert, you could offer workshops as well.

Good equipment is key. If you have dull blades or do not have them set correctly, you will be hacking up your good fiber as well as building up your frustration. So the shearing blades you use should always be cleaned and well oiled. You also need a well sharpened comb to use with your shears. When you first place your comb onto your shears, let the shears run for at least 30 seconds. The vibrations serve to actually settle the comb into line with the blades and your first cut will be sharper. This is one area where you really should buy the best of the best, as low quality and low powered shears will clog, dull and rip up your fiber.

If your new blades won't cut, then the blade set is not correct. The tension needs adjustment or the protective coating is still on the new blades.

You should have a nice thin but strong bag to put your fleece into. Use one bag for each alpaca. You should have index cards, or tags or something to use as a label for each bag. You should put the date, the name of the animal, and the quality of the fleece as a first or second. You should never mix the two. Also write any other notes you want to know or your buyer may want to know about your fleece. Try not to bag your fleece if it is damp. Simply let it air dry before you bag it.

You can shear using a mat on the ground, standing or a shearing table. If using a mat, it can be very hard on your knees and back if you are doing multiple animals. If using a table, it can be difficult to secure the animal on to the table. A tilting table may be the solution. The key to shearing no matter what position you are going to use is control of the legs. Alpacas can and will kick and depending on their temperament may struggle and even scream. If you are using a table, the leg restraint cords will be positioned well. The rope should be above the first joint, not too tight to hurt, not too loose to allow slippage or escape.

If you stand your alpaca, it is helpful to secure the head and to position it against a wall to help you keep it in one spot. Alpacas will often drop down to the cush position at some point, so be prepared to follow it down and perhaps up again. If shearing on the ground, two strong helpers taking each end are invaluable.

For any position of shearing, you will want your cuttings to be as long as possible. This means you will want to be as close to the skin as possible. A comb with more teeth will allow you to cut closer to the skin as it lifts and separates the fiber. Placing a tarp on the ground under the shearing table or alpaca will help you to keep your fiber cleaner and allow you to collect all as quickly as possible. Clean your area after each animal to keep the fiber pure.

Long and smooth cuts will give you the best fiber. Start with the upper part of the rear leg, pull the skin slightly toward the outer leg and cut up and then toward and then along the belly. This will be considered thirds, but will allow you clean access to the more valuable fiber. Then you repeat with the front leg, cutting up the leg and then along the belly toward the cut you just made. Now you can finish the tops of the legs and you can bag these as seconds. You should have cut up to and maybe a small way into the blanket area. Now cut from the top of the hind leg forward and up over the whole blanket.

Start your cuts from the belly area and working your way up to the spine. The longer you can cut the fiber and the smoother you can run each cut the better. This can be bagged as prime or first cut if you are able to cut it long. If you cut it shorter and have to go back and make another cut, then you should label this as seconds.

You can now shear up the neck. Take care here as well, as the legs are prone to being nicked. The chest area of the alpaca is very easy to nick, and your best technique is to shear upward. This may be seconds or thirds, depending on how many guard hairs and how long the fiber is. Now you can trim off all the rest. It is customary to leave a puff of hair on the crown of the head and to just trim the tail a little. Repeat on the other side. Note some shearing professionals call the cuts "blows".

Here's a good tip. In order to have as little contamination in your fleece as possible, it's a good idea to shear from light colors to darker colors and from fine fiber animals to the coarser fleeced animals.

If you go into your first shearing knowing you will bungle the cuts, you will trip over your cords and all sorts of other little mishaps. You need to be relaxed and the alpacas will realize you are relaxed. They will be easier to work with and less stressed.

Your first shearing may take up to an hour. That's ok, as you go along, you will be able to knock this time down to 5 to 10 minutes for an alpaca. Alpaca shearing on your own can be a struggle at first, but it does get easier with each animal.

Brandon Roy: Comeback Kid


One of the greatest things about sports is an inspirational story. Obviously, people watch sports for the actual sporting events themselves. But, there is also another magical part of the sporting world that can relate to anyone, no matter what their level of sports knowledge or actual interest is. The stories that develop with players and teams we love to love, and just as much, love to hate. These stories are the things that make names who wouldn't be so well known, such as Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin last year, valid topics of discussion in our daily lives. Seriously, think back to the last year in sports. You could not turn on ESPN or go to any sports website without seeing some mention of "Tebowing" or "Linsanity". It is moments like this that make the world of sports such an incredible world to be a part of.

Another moment may be on the horizon for us during the upcoming NBA season. After the sudden retirement of Brandon Roy before last year's NBA season, he will be lacing the sneakers back up to hit the hardwood once again during the upcoming season.

One of the absolute worst things that can happen to an athlete is injury. When you're playing sports, no matter what regulations are set in place, injuries are an inevitable element. Some injuries come and go, but others can linger and haunt an athlete for an entire career. It appeared that Roy was going to become another helpless victim on the long list of great athletes who's potential and dreams would be taken away. When dealing with injuries, one of the most cringe worthy phrases to hear is "career ending." This is the exact phrase we heard just over a year ago when it related to Brandon Roy. The doctors went as far as to say Roy "can't do this" and that he "might end up not walking." All scary thoughts for any person to hear, especially for a 27 year old. Roy went through a series of knee problems throughout his career. Without any cartilage in his knees, it is hard to believe Roy will even be making a comeback.

Brandon Roy first entered the league in the 2006 NBA Draft. Roy was fresh off his senior season with the Washington Huskies, where he lead his team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance. Besides averaging 20 points per game, Roy was bestowed with the award of Pac-10 player of the year. Going in to the draft, Roy was known for his slashing ability and great shooting. He was considered by many to be a "sure thing" in the NBA, and considered by many to be the top prospect in the draft class. With the sixth pick in the 2006 NBA Draft (My inner David Stern just came out.), the Timberwolves selected Brandon Roy. The Timberwolves would not be the destination for Roy for very long, as he was traded to Portland. The Blazers draft night in 2006 may have taken top honors for the night, not only did they add Roy to the team, but they also added LaMarcus Aldridge to the roster.

I don't think there is any doubt that Brandon Roy not only lived up to the hype, but he far exceeded it. Roy went on to average 17 points per game, along with 4 assists and 4 rebounds. These numbers were not only good enough for a place on the rookie squad of the annual Rookie/Sophomore game during All-Star weekend, they were also good enough for Roy to earn the year's NBA Rookie of the Year award. Although Roy had fantastic numbers throughout the season, it wasn't a season without injury. Roy missed 20 games early on with a left heel injury.

The next season was another excellent season for Roy. Some players have a sophomore slump, but not Brandon Roy. It was more of a "sophomore skyrocket." The reason this term is fitting is because it seemed the possibilities were endless for the young player. In the previous season, he was a member of the Rookie team during All-Star Weekend. This season, he returned to play for the sophomore team during the Rookie/Sophomore game. This wouldn't be all for Roy during the coveted weekend, as he was also chosen as an All-Star reserve for the Western Conference. For only his second season in the league, it was a great honor for Roy to be chosen by the coaches in the NBA to be apart of the Western All-Star team. Besides these accolades, Roy increased his points per game to 19 points, paired with a slight increase in the rebounds and assists categories as well.

The breakout season of Brandon Roy was bestowed upon us in the 2008-09 season. In just his third season in the NBA, Roy increased his points per game once again from 19 points, to nearly 23 points a game. The 22.6 points per game stat was enough to make Roy a top ten scorer in the NBA, coming in at number ten. An excellent comparison to show how great of a scorer Roy had become from the previous season to this one can be showcased through his 30+ points games. In the previous season, Roy only had two 30+ points games. In this season, Roy had ELEVEN of them. Not to mention, Roy delivered a 52 point game against the Phoenix Suns. Besides the stats, he also kept adding more and more accomplishments to his record. At season's end, Roy was named to the All-NBA Second Team. He was also 9th in MVP voting for the season. Impressive stats and accomplishments for a third year player in the league.

Although Roy was on the rise in the 08-09 season, it was also the awakening of his knee problems. At the beginning of this season, Roy underwent a 20 minute surgery to remove a piece of cartilage from his knee that was causing irritation. The doctor described the knee problems with, "He's just got a basketball player's knee." This was not the first time that Roy had underwent surgery, though. In 2001, surgery was performed on his left knee while he was in high school. Just three years later in 2004, Roy had another knee surgery on his other knee during his Junior season at Washington. After the surgery in 2008, it was hopeful that Roy would be perfectly fine and go on to be the face of the Portland Trail Blazers for years to come. Sadly, it was just wishful thinking.

Before the 2009-10 season began, Roy was signed to a five-year contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers. Speaking money, Roy was only earning $4 million dollars in the last year of his rookie contract. In the first year of his newly extended contract, Roy would be making $14 million dollars. A pretty solid jump financially for a 25 year old. Roy had an average of 21 points per game and was showing no signs of slowing down. But, in April just before the playoffs, Roy had to have surgery once again on his right knee. The injury was expected to cause him to miss the entire first round of the playoffs, but Roy returned 8 days later to play in game four of the Blazers' first round series against the Phoenix Suns. Roy didn't have much scoring input in the last 3 games of the series he played, scoring just 10, 5, and 14 points respectively. The Blazers' were eliminated from the postseason in six games.

The 2010-11 season began, and little did anyone know that it was soon to be the last season before Roy's retirement. In January of 2011, Brandon Roy had to undergo another knee surgery. This time, the surgery was performed on both knees. During this season, Roy only ended up playing in 47 games and averaged 12 points per game. 12 points per game was definitely a dramatic decrease in scoring production for Roy, and it was obvious that the knee problems were becoming an issue for him. The 2011 postseason was a rough one for Roy. He played limited minutes in the first round series against the Dallas Mavericks, and even had to fight off tears. Roy said himself "There was a point in the first half, and I was thinking 'You better not cry.' I mean, serious. I mean, there was a moment where I felt really sorry for myself. Then I was like, nah, you can't be sorry for yourself. I'm a grown man, but there was a moment there that I felt sorry for myself. Especially when I think I can still help."

All of the knee injuries culminated to the unfathomable. The retirement of Brandon Roy just after five seasons in the NBA. Roy had the following to say after announcing his retirement.

"This is a very difficult and painful day. I love the game, I love the Portland Trail Blazers and I love our fans, but after consulting with my doctors, I will seek a determination that I've suffered a career ending injury, pursuant to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.

"My family and health are most important to me and in the end this decision was about them and my quality of life. I want to thank Paul Allen, Larry Miller, Coach McMillan, the entire Trail Blazers organization and our fans for all of their love and support during my time in Portland. It was a great ride."

Fast forward to present day, and Brandon Roy will be making his return to the NBA.

"After a few months of sitting out, I decided, 'Hey, I don't want to stop playing basketball,' " Roy said Tuesday at a news conference at Target Center after signing a two-year, $10.4 million contract. "I wanted to continue going forward. It was never a situation where I said, 'I'm done forever.' It's just more of a pause."

The question I'm sure many people are asking is, what is going to allow Brandon Roy to return? He has had six different knee surgeries throughout his basketball career. Roy had a procedure performed by the name of platelet-rich plasma therapy. While it is medically unproven, it is a procedure that Kobe Bryant has had performed in the past. A simple explanation of platelet-rich plasma therapy is the injection of your own blood into the body to help the joints.

"I'm not saying I'm Kobe Bryant, but my body felt really good. I've been working out ever since, and there hasn't been any swelling. I'm excited I got it done," Roy said.

The season is only weeks away. One of the things I will be watching the most is the play and production of Brandon Roy. Will he be back to his old ways, scoring 20 points a game? Or, will the knee problems be too much for him? The inspirational story is something that sports will always have. Hopefully, the Brandon Roy return will become one. A man who has undergone multiple knee surgeries returning to the NBA in top-notch form, what could be better than that? It will seem kind of like a homecoming for Timberwolves fans, as Roy was originally drafted by the team. It will also be a homecoming for Roy, though. A homecoming to the basketball court, and that could be the best homecoming of all.
